Mega-Flop Pan Projected To Lose An Awful Lot Of Money

The latest Peter Pan movie, simply called ‘Pan’, is shaping up to be one of the biggest box office flops of the year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Pan’ could lose its studio Warner Bros. more than $150 million (almost £100 million).

The film cost around £100 million to make, plus the same again to market. ‘Pan’ is currently stuck at just £26 million at the global box office so far, and faces a long road to profitability.

The film made just £9.8 million in the US in its opening weekend. In contrast, ‘Jurassic World’ – the year’s biggest film – made more than £135 million.

‘Pan’ is a kind off prequel to the classic J.M. Barrie story, with Hugh Jackman playing the villain Blackbeard and Garrett Hedlund a young Captain Hook. Action-packed and full of CGI, it’s a world away from the Disney animated version.

The reworking of the traditional story (there’s no Wendy, for example) is with a series of sequels in mind according to THR, but that seems unlikely now.

The reviews for the film were bad (sample quote: “This joyless, juiceless Pan is a theme-park ride from hell”) but it was the unfamiliar premise and confusing marketing that may’ve lead to it’s box office struggles.

The film joins ‘Jupiter Ascending’, ‘Tomorrowland’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ as the biggest flops of 2015… so far.
