Jackie Chan Says Chinese Warcraft Success ‘Scares The Americans’

Jackie Chan is hailing ‘Warcraft’ as a great Chinese success.

Appearing at the Shanghai International Film Festival, screen legend Jackie Chan explained why he thinks the success of ‘Warcraft’ in China is scaring the American film industry.

“Warcraft made [$91 million] in two days — this has scared the Americans,” he said. “If we can make a film that earns 10 billion [$1.5 billion], then people from all over the world who study film will learn Chinese, instead of us learning English.”

Of course, while ‘Warcraft’ studio Legendary remains mostly US operated, the company was bought out by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group for $3.5 billion back in January.

And it looks like Jackie Chan is hailing ‘Warcraft’ as a great success for Chinese cinema.

“Saying that China was overlooked as a “nothing market” for decades, Chan suggested that the world has come to see the country’s entertainment sector in a very different light of late,” explain The Hollywood Reporter. “He cited the phenomenal Chinese box-office performance of Legendary Entertainment’s Warcraft as evidence of the new order.”

But is ‘Warcraft’ really evidence of a great Chinese-made movie?

The film has performed incredibly well at the Chinese box office, raking in a huge $144.7 million across China in as little as four days. But the same can’t be said of the international market, with ‘Warcraft’ grossing a meagre $10.7 million at the US box office, where it also received mostly negative reviews.

“It is you, not us, who makes China powerful,” said Chan to the predominantly Chinese audience. “So, thank you all — we hope the Chinese film industry gets even more powerful.”

But can a Chinese film earn $1.5 billion at the box office?

The biggest Chinese movie success to date – ‘The Mermaid’ – managed just $528.6 million earlier this year. Comparatively, the highest grossing movie ever worldwide is still ‘Avatar’ with an astounding $2.7 billion.

China may be an increasingly large market…

But figures like that are a long way off.
