Is Ted Lasso the first TV series to spin-off from an advert?

The new Apple TV+ exclusive stars Saturday Night Live and Horrible Bosses star Jason Sudeikis as the eponymous American Football coach who lands the job of managing a top flight English football team. If it already sounds familiar, it’s because it’s a continuation of the character Sudeikis portrayed in a series of adverts for NBC Sports' coverage of the Premier League in 2013.

One hilarious promo, for the network’s 2014 World Cup coverage, which saw Lasso coaching Tottenham Hotspur, went viral for Sudeikis’ hilarious parody of an all-American coach attempting football lingo.

The new ten-part series sees Lasso taking over as manager at the fictional Richmond AFC. It will premiere globally with the first three episodes on Apple TV+ on Friday, 14 August. Following the premiere, new episodes will debut weekly on Fridays thereafter on the streaming service.

Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. The series also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed.

Ted Lasso will premiere on Apple TV+ on 14 August.
