Line of Duty star Tommy Jessop has opened up on the realty of securing work as an actor ahead of his new documentary.

The actor had played Terry Boyle in seasons 1, 5 and 6 of the award-winning police series but has since struggled to secure further acting roles.

Speaking ahead of the premiere of his new show Tommy Jessop goes to Hollywood, the actor, who has Down syndrome, told Metro that he had been left "frustrated" by the lack of work after Line of Duty.

Noting that he doesn't "take rejection at all well", the actor explained he decided to take matters into his own hands and create his own superhero film, enlisting the help of his filmmaker brother Will Jessop.

In Tommy Jessop goes to Hollywood, the actor and his brother travel to the US with the goal of making their film Roger the Superhero, with Tommy starring in the lead role.

The titular hero is inspired by Tommy's teddy bear Roger, with the character's superpowers based off of the actor's experiences with Down syndrome.

"I hope that the film will inspire other people to look with new eyes at the wonderful people with Down syndrome and seek opportunities to work with them," Will said.

The documentary will also feature appearances from the likes of Game of Thrones' Kit Harington, The White Lotus' Will Sharpe and Scream star Neve Campbell as the brothers work to get the project off the ground.

Through guerrilla marketing and family favours, the pair are able to shoot an action trailer with Tommy facing off against an army of villains.

"This documentary is an amazing adventure and a dream come true. It truly has been wicked having a camera and being able to tell my own story," the actor said in a statement.

"Some of my personal highlights are going to Hollywood with my brother Will, meeting A-list actors, pitching my movie called Roger the Superhero, and singing along to S Club 7. I give it a 10 out of 10."

Tommy Jessop Goes to Hollywood premieres on Monday, August 21 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
