Nobody is more excited for Avengers director Joss Whedon to jump to the DC Extended Universe than… Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige?!

Strange as that sounds, it seems to be true - and not in a snarky "he's your problem now" kind of way, either. Feige revealed this week that he spoke with Whedon personally when news broke that he was in talks to both write and direct the first-ever live-action solo Batgirl movie for DC.

"He called a couple months ago, which he didn't have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him," Feige told Deadline at Marvel Studios' open house in LA.

In fact, Feige went a step further to reveal that he's as excited as any fanboy or fangirl to see what Joss Whedon will do in DC's sandbox.

"We couldn't be more supportive," Feige said. "We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film. [It'll] be awesome."

The open support from Feige is at least somewhat surprising, since Whedon has admitted in the past that he clashed with Marvel Studios while shooting Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Whedon has yet to speak publicly about the Batgirl movie, but reports suggest he'll be basing it on the character's reinvention in DC Comics' New 52 continuity.

Batgirl is one of several Bat-Family projects in the works at DC Entertainment, along with Gotham City Sirens, Nightwing, Deadshot, Suicide Squad 2 and, of course, The Batman.

Whedon joining the DC Extended Universe has sparked a divisive reaction from fans, but Digital Spy thinks it could save the franchise. Click here for our explanation about why this Batgirl movie is so critical.
