Michelle Williams In Talks To Star In Jonah Hill’s ‘Mid-90s’

EXCLUSIVE: Michelle Williams, just nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her turn as the distraught mother in Manchester By The Sea, is in talks to star in what will become Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid-90s. The film, about a boy coming of age in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s as he finds his life lessons through his skateboarding buddies, will be produced by Scott Rudin (Fences) and Eli Bush (Ex Machina, The Grand Budapest Hotel) with Ken Kao (Knight Of Cups, Sea Of Trees) for A24.

Hill penned the script for the film which follows a teenager named Stevie as he struggles with the various roles he must play in life: surrogate partner to his co-dependent single mother (Williams), receiver of abuse from his troubled older brother, and invisible stand-in to his wealthier school friends. As Stevie inches his way into acceptance of the crew of skateboarders, he deals with issues of class, race and socioeconomic privilege and under-privilege he’s never experienced before. Stevie’s mother must deal with her son growing further and further apart from her, which spins her out of control.

The filmmakers are eyeing a June start. The four-time nominated Williams, who is also set to play Janis Joplin for director Sean Durkin, is repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
