Mr & Mrs Smith: Release date, cast, plot for Donald Glover's Amazon series as trailer drops

Killer couple rom-com Mr & Mrs Smith is the latest movie to get the reboot treatment, this time on the small-screen via Amazon Prime Video.

Originally released in 2005 and directed by Doug Liman, Mr & Mrs Smith stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a loving couple who both secretly work as contract killers, an unusual career that each partner is happily oblivious to. Despite this, they managed to maintain a relatively healthy marriage - until their opposing employers task them with killing each other.

Despite being a relatively successful box office hit, the movie’s reputation off-screen may have overshadowed its onscreen antics, with Pitt and Jolie starting their own personal relationship during the movie’s shoot.

Now, the concept is being retooled by Community and Solo actor Donald Glover, who will also star. Here’s everything we know about it so far.

When is the Mr & Mrs Smith series released?

Mr & Mrs Smith is expected to arrive on Prime Video on Friday, 2 February 2024.

Filming for Glover’s series began in the summer of 2022, with the show originally scheduled to hit Amazon’s streaming service later that year. The reboot was later pushed to November 2023, but due to Hollywood strikes it was delayed again.

What is the plot of the Mr & Mrs Smith series?

As detailed above, Liman’s original Mr & Mrs Smith movie saw a married couple played by Pitt and Jolie attempt to take the other out after the hitman agencies they work for task them with killing each other.

Before long, the duo decide to put their guns down and work together in order to put a stop to the organisation behind their planned murders.

2023’s version, co-created by Glover and Francesca Sloane, looks set to follow a similar storyline while taking things to new and unexpected places — presumably enough to warrant a number of different episodes.

According to the series' official synopsis, “John and Jane Smith enter into a new phase of their marriage after agreeing to work as spies for a mysterious agency.”

As it stands, that’s all we currently know about the show’s plot but we’re sure more will be unveiled between now and November.

In addition to co-creating the series, Glover also co-stars as John Smith, with PEN15 and Man Seeking Woman star Maya Erskine playing his wife Jane.

Erskine joined the project in April 2022 after Phoebe Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project due to “creative differences” in September 2021.

Later, in an interview with Vanity Fair, the Fleabag and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star clarified her reasons for leaving the project. “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it – still care about it,” she told the outlet.

“And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision.”

She continued, explaining that some creative collaborations are a lot “like a marriage” and that “some marriages don’t work out.”

With Erskine taking her place, additional cast members were soon unveiled, including The Batman’s Paul Dano, The Big Lebowski’s John Turturro, Chewing Gum’s Michaela Coel, Parker Posey and Brazilian actor Wagner Moura. Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Sarah Paulson and Alexander Skarsgård will also appear.

It’s currently unclear what each of these guest-star roles will entail.

Is there a trailer for Amazon Prime’s Mr & Mrs Smith?

"Have you ever killed anyone?" Romance vibes and bullets fly high in the first teaser trailer for Mrs and Mrs Smith, released in early December 2023.

Lasting just shy of two minutes, it introduces us to Glover and Erskine's married couple who are secretly hired killers. At first, we see them innocently chatting away in a cafe but by the time the teaser ends, they're bloody and bruised.

Meanwhile, we also showed small snippets of the show's ensemble cast. Watch it above.

Before this trailer arrived, we were given a very brief 'first-look' via a wider glimpse at Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming streaming slate.

Mixing cool dialogue with guns and a few explosions, this very small clip shows both Glover and Erskine in action — whilst leaving us all wanting to see a little bit more of the action.
