Ms. Marvel fans torn by character change in first trailer

The official trailer for Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel, has received a mixed response from fans as the world got its first look at the iconic superhero.

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series, which will arrive on streaming service on 8 June, tells the story of Kamala Khan – the first Muslim superhero to appear on screen in the franchise.

Starring Iman Vellani in the titular role, the show follows a Pakistani American teen as she comes to possess superhuman abilities while living a normal life in New Jersey.

Set to The Weeknd’s smash-hit Blinding Lights, the trailer revealed a playful energy for the show which kicked off with Kamala in the high-school guidance counsellor’s office.

Through the use of doodles, speech bubbles and pop-up emoji, it’s made clear that Khan is somewhat of a nerdy teen, who then has to deal with also having the power to create glowing cosmic energy.

The trailer also sees the character sporting a costume that is very accurate to the comics. However, it appears the character’s striking powers are linked to her magical bracelets.

Whereas, the comics saw Khan develop special powers called 'morphogenetics' which mean she manipulate her molecular structure to stretch, change, or disguise herself.

The decision to change the source of her powers and the style of CGI effects left some fans puzzled as one viewer commented: “They really turned Ms Marvel into Green Lantern...”

“Did we ever get an actual reason for the ms marvel change? i'm not buying the 'too similar to mr fantastic' excuse..,” one fan stated, referencing ongoing rumours the change had been made due to a Fantastic 4 character.

Another alluded to the claims as they tweeted: “I can’t decide if I’m mad that they changed her powers. I know no one has acknowledged inhumans in the MCU yet but still …… I suppose it means Mr Fantastic is right around the corner and ready to make his MCU debut”.

However, most fans were excited to see what the show’s creators had done with the ground-breaking character as one wrote: “Idc if they changed her powers or not I am just happy i have a character from my background that too a teenager”

“ms marvel trailer dropped… im scared, worried, concerned… but im really excited for her to be in the MCU. im excited what they do with story and I LOVE the representation!!!” another tweeted.

One fan revealed their joy at seeing more representation in the MCU as they tweeted: "Being a Muslim-Pakistani myself, I’ve anticipated #MsMarvel for a long time now, and seeing this kind of representation warms my heart. Thank you, Marvel. This means a lot to me."

"“It’s not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world” any way don’t mind me I’m a mess," another added.

Elsewhere, the trailer also featured multiple references to the wider Marvel universe, including Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.

The character plays a huge part in the world of Kamala Khan, and Ms. Marvel is set to appear in The Marvels so watch this space.

Miss Marvel launches on Disney+ 8 June.
