A new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore teases a return to Hogwarts and a battle against the dark wizard Grindelwald who is now played by Mads Mikkelsen following Johnny Depp's departure from the role.

Starring an ensemble cast including Mikkelsen, Jude Law, Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller and Dan Fogler, the third Fantastic Beasts film will see Dumbledore teaming up with Newt Scamander to defeat Grindelwald who has unleashed havoc on the wizarding world.

The trailer, which teases to explore Dumbledore's background in more detail also shows the characters returning to Hogwarts with the Room of Requirement and Great Hall all glimpsed in the clip.

While Dumbledore did not appear in the first Fantastic Beasts film and had a supporting role in the second one, the trailer, which is also narrated by the character, positions the wizard in the centre of the third installment.

The first two Fantastic Beasts films largely revolved around the adventures of Scamander, played by Redmayne.

Katherine Waterston's character, Tina, who was the female lead in the first two films, is not seen in the new trailer which otherwise shows every other major cast member in the series.

As well as Mikkelsen taking over the role of Grindelwald from Depp after the Sweeney Todd actor lost a libel case against The Sun over calling him a "wife beater", Richard Coyle also joys the series as Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, Abertforth was played by Ciaran Hinds who this year has been Oscar nominated for his performance in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast.

A spin-off of Harry Potter, David Yates is directing again and the film is also co-written by JK Rowling who has penned all of the Fantastic Beasts films so far.

Steve Kloves, who wrote seven of the eight Harry Potter films has returned to the franchise as her co-writer.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is in cinemas from 8 April.
