Timothée Chalamet sent social media into a tailspin when he arrived on the red carpet at the Oscars wearing a suit jacket without a shirt underneath.

The 26-year-old star is at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles as part of the team behind sci-fi blockbuster Dune, which is nominated for 10 awards including Best Picture.

He arrived on the carpet and immediately sent Twitter buzzing with his look, in which he paired a custom black blazer from Louis Vuitton with an attention-grabbing bare chest.

Fans were quick to compare Chalamet's unique style to One Direction star Harry Styles, who has won plaudits for his bold fashion choices, as well as — perhaps more surprisingly — a-ha frontman Morten Harket.

While showbiz comparisons quickly arose, there were a number of Chalamet fans with a seemingly broken caps lock after the star's arrival.

One wrote that Chalamet's look "will live in my mind rent free forever", while another wrote that "the world is temporarily brought together in a fit of swooning and fainting" thanks to the actor.

Chalamet portrays pampered heir Paul Atreides in Dune — the first part of director Denis Villeneuve's epic adaptation of the Frank Herbert sci-fi novel.

The movie has scored a slew of nominations and is considered a favourite to win in numerous technical categories, despite a lack of acting nods.

Chalamet himself is a previous Oscar nominee, scoring Best Actor recognition four years ago for his lead performance in romantic drama Call Me By Your Name.

He is set to reprise his role as Atreides in the second part of Dune, which is due in cinemas in October 2023.
