Peaky Blinders season 5 opens with Michael Gray (Finn Cole) in New York and with the Wall Street Crash looming, we don't think Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) is going to be very happy with the cunning accountant.

Last season saw Michael banished to the States to run the Shelby's US operations, after he failed to reveal his mum Polly's fake plot to help Luca Changretta assassinate Tommy.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press about the potential power battle between Tommy and Michael, Finn said: "It's so difficult to say. I think that he has the skills and talents and there are definitely things that we've hidden and subdued about Michael's character points that could be exploited and that storyline could be done.

"As this season goes on we see more of his true colours and whether or not that's going to manifest itself in a huge head-to-head with any of these main characters, that's what we have yet to uncover.

"But we start to see his potential and his ideologies growing, and that's going to allow for some really cool story points to follow and sink their teeth into.

Executive producer Jamie Glazebrook added: "The other brothers, all the other siblings, with Arthur and Polly, they know what their place is in the organisation, it's likely a finely oiled machine.

"But in a good way with Michael, it's not clear, you're looking for your place and that creates so much tension, because is it here or over there in America? The tension that that has brewed up over three seasons sort of slowly starts coming to a head."

Finn added: "You don't see the bits where he's alone, you don't see those moments as often, which allows us to explore and as this series goes on, to go down these different roads. There are so many hidden things we are yet to uncover."

Helen McCory, who play's Michal's mum Polly, said their relationship struggles this year: "That it’s a bit more strained because he becomes far more greedy. I think that whole idea of trying to keep your son away… that first moment that she sees him and he comes back and she starts changing because of having her son."

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has teased another clash for Tommy, in the form of the far-right politician, Oswald Mosely (Sam Claflin). Plus he's spoken about a potential role for Line of Duty's Stephen Graham in series 6 or 7.

Stephen's LoD co-star, Vicky McClure recently revealed that she's failed to land a role in the BBC Brummie crime-drama multiple times.

However, Knight has offered some hope, after he said she would be "great" while promoting a new Peaky Blinders festival.

Peaky Blinders airs on BBC One.
