Pixar’s Pete Docter Answers The Inside Out Question We Were All Asking

Ever since Pixar released ‘Inside Out’ earlier this year, fans might’ve universally adored it, but many had a burning question they needed answering.

As we know, ‘Inside Out’ is about 11-year-old Riley, a girl forced to relocate across America with her parents.

There are five key emotions that control Riley’s thoughts - Joy, Fear, Sadness, Anger, and Disgust.

Riley’s emotions are a mixture of male and female, whereas when we see her Mum and Dad’s mind, they have all-female and all-male characters, respectively.

But the speculation is now over.

Pete Docter, the film’s director, told HitFix, “I would love to have some deep philosophical answer for you, but the answer is really comedy.”

Some internet fans had theorised that we see a mix of male and female characters in Riley’s mind because she’s yet to define or accept her sexual orientation, which would make plausible sense as a young person hitting puberty.

Docter could have simply agreed that this internet theory was true and would’ve been a smart answer, but at least he was honest.

So there we go. The confusion over why Riley’s mind was populated differently to her parents was, in fact, purely for comedy purposes.

‘Inside Out’ made almost $819 million during its worldwide cinema run, and is due out on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 23 November.
