Renfield, the new action-horror-comedy which stars Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula, has flopped at the box office.

The film, which has a budget of $65 million (£52m) without including marketing costs, only grossed $10 million (£8m) worldwide over its opening weekend.

In the UK, Renfield had a particularly weak opening weekend, taking in around £680,000 in its first three days of release, leaving it in fifth place.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie remained top of the UK box office during the second weekend of the Easter half term, though Renfield was the highest-grossing new release.

The other main new film of the week was Japanese anime film Suzume which opened comparatively strongly to a taking of £469,100 with a per-screen average of £1,161, versus Renfield's £1,129.

Renfield was just Cage's second major live action studio release of the last decade after 2022's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent which also underperformed at the box office.

It also received mixed reviews and has a middling 60% approval rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The Guardian gave it two stars and saying: "The film’s most lively inhabitant, ironically enough, is Dracula himself, Renfield’s outraged boss.

"He’s played with a knowing gusto by Nicolas Cage, who appears to have reached the point in his career where he is essentially called on to play the role of Nic Cage."

The film was also called a "sloppy mess" by the BBC though Cage has received positive notices for his performances as the Lord of Darkness.

Renfield also stars Nicholas Hoult as Dracula's titular manservant, Awkwafina as an honest New Orleans cop, Ben Schwartz as a gangster and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo as a mob boss.
