Sarah Hyland Wins 3 Year Restraining Order Against Ex-Boyfriend Matt Prokop

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland has upgraded her restraining order against her reportedly abusive ex-boyfriend, Matt Prokop.

The actress was granted a new three-year protective order on Thursday after switching to Lindsay Lohan's lawyer, Shawn Holley, and getting a judge to heighten the original, but temporary, order ahead of a hearing set for Friday, a court official told the Daily News.

Hyland's first emergency order banned Prokop, 24, from coming within 100 yards of the star, 23, or her dog.

In her Sept. 19 filing, the pretty brunette claimed her ex had "habitually verbally abused" her with names including "c**t", "whore" and "slut" and even physically assaulted her at her home in May after disapproving of an outfit she was wearing.

"Mr. Prokop grabbed me by the shoulders and slammed my back into the side of my car," she said in a statement. "He placed both of his hands around my throat and began to choke me. Hs grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak."

The actress said she feared he would kill her and finally broke free after kicking the High School Musical 3 actor in the leg. "I was going to call the police, but he apologized, swore it would never happen again and begged me not to call the police, so I did not," she explained.

Hyland claimed that she attempted to split from Prokop - who she had been dating for five years - over the next three months but feared the consequences of making him angry. On Aug. 11, the couple fought again, and this time the star said that she tried to reach out to his mother in Texas.

"She sent me a text stating that if I broke up with him, he would kill himself, that it would be my fault and that she was not coming," Hyland told the court in her filing.

The actress revealed that she eventually turned to her on-screen mother Julie Bowen for help, and together they confronted Prokop on Aug. 16. After speaking to Prokop, Hyland claimed that he ran outside, began screaming and threw a lighter at her.

"Ms. Bowen spoke with him and then advised me to leave immediately, implying that it might not be safe for me to stay," the star said. The Struck By Lightening actress alleged that Prokop told Bowen "he wanted to make me so miserable that I would take a shotgun and kill myself."

Later, her ex was said to have texted Hyland saying he was outside another house she owned and demanded she meet with him within 10 minutes or he would "drive through the garage door to get inside and set the house on fire." She added, "he also threatened that if I did not comply, I would never see my dog again."

The terrified actress said that Prokop "relentlessly bombarded" her with "vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voicemails including his own suicide threats." She revealed that they met one last time on Aug. 17, and that Prokop grabbed her phone and deleted all of his texts to her.

Her former partner entered a rehab facility the next day, she said, and he was due for release Sept. 21, prompting her to seek the restraining order. She said she hoped rehab would help Prokop, but that the facility director contacted her and advised her to seek the stay-away order "due to Mr. Prokop's mental state and attitude toward me."
