Shailene Woodley has revealed that she ate just 350 calories per day in the last weeks of filming new movie Adrift.

The 26-year-old actress described the experience as ‘f**king miserable’, playing a yachtswoman who, with her husband, survive a hurricane at sea but then have to make it to safety on a nearby island.

Her diet consisted of one can of salmon, steamed broccoli, and egg yolks.

“I can’t sleep when I’m hungry, so I would have a glass of wine to basically pass the f**k out,” she told The Times.

“It was f**king miserable. For the last two weeks (of the shoot) I had a can of salmon, some steamed broccoli and two egg yolks every day.”

The movie is based on the real-life story of Tami Oldham and her then-fiance Richard Sharpe who had to survive for 41 days at sea in 1983 without food, a radio or hope of rescue.

Sharpe is played by Huger Games star Sam Claflin, and according to Woodley, the movie didn’t actually take that much acting.

“What the audience sees in that scene (when a hurricane is approaching) is a look of nervousness, but it’s really Sam and I trying not puke when the cameras are rolling,” she added to USA Today.

“It’s like, ‘Keep it together’. That’s pure anxiety.”

“I don’t know that I could do it without Sam,” she continued. “We both really were there for one another in our moments of extreme exhaustion and hunger.

“When you’re stuck on a boat with 15 people every single day, you’re all dealing with things like the toilets breaking and everyone just having to jump in the ocean to use the bathroom.

“There’s a lot of discomfort, there’s a lot of bodily smells. And a lot of humour. That’s the glue that keeps everyone together.”
