Martin Freeman has offered an update on the possible return of Sherlock.

The actor played John Watson in the hugely popular BBC series, which wrapped its fourth series back in 2017. So what are the chances of the show returning for a fifth run?

Well, as Martin points out, co-star Benedict Cumberbatch as well as writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are all busy at the moment (he's not wrong), but they definitely would consider returning for another series if it was "something really special".

"They're few and far between, the discussions about Sherlock, just because Mark and Steven, the writers, and Benedict and I, are all lucky enough to be not only working on stuff that we like and are interested in, but we know what Sherlock is," Martin told Collider.

"You don't look that gift horse in the mouth 'cos that sort of stuff doesn't happen very often in someone's life. It's a huge, huge, worldwide hit, and way beyond anything we could've imagined."

He added: "If it's something really special, and if it's something really meaty and interesting, then I think we'd all be open to that.

"We couldn't come back with something that was quite good. It would have to feel really, really special. It was that kind of show."

Martin's comments follow Sherlock star Louise Brealey also weighing in on the series' future and him previously revealing the "challenging" part of playing John Watson.

Sherlock airs on the BBC.
