Solid reviews for Netflix Sherlock Holmes YA spin-off 'Enola Holmes'

The long-awaited screen adaptation of Enola Holmes – plucky teen sister of Sherlock and Mycroft – has landed on Netflix to rave reviews.

Starring Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown in the title role, it takes on the first of writer Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes YA novel series, The Case of the Missing Marquess, published in 2006.

In it, Enola seeks the help of Sherlock and Mycroft, played by Henry Cavill and Hunger Games star Sam Claflin, to find her mother, who has gone missing.

Helmed by Fleabag and Killing Eve director Harry Bradbeer, it also stars Helena Bonham Carter as the missing matriarch Eudoria Holmes, alongside Harry Potter's Frances de la Tour, Fiona Shaw, and Adeel Akhtar.

And thus far, the notices are roundly positive.

Per Collider: “'Enola Holmes' is a total charmer that will have you eager to see further adventures of this young detective.”

“It successfully imagines a place for its heroine in Holmes' world, then convinces young viewers that Enola needn't be constrained by that world's borders,” adds The Hollywood Reporter.

Reckons The Times: “Phew. The prevailing emotion on watching Millie Bobby Brown play Sherlock Holmes's teenage sister in this jaunty adaptation of Nancy Springer's novels is relief.”

Writes Variety: “Brown's acting style recalls the effusive spontaneity Keira Knightley brought to Sense and Sensibility, shattering the straitlaced propriety of so many Jane Austen adaptations before it.”

Forbes adds that it's 'good enough to spawn Netflix’s next movie franchise', which, given the five more books in the series, could well be the plan.

Empire is a little less effusive, however: “Jack Thorne's sometimes thin screenplay aims for a sunny-side-up appeal, but too often these cheery morals hit you over the head like a ton of bricks.”

Enola Holmes is streaming now on Netflix.
