Sony Picks Up Trainspotting Sequel

Sony company Tri-Star Pictures have acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Danny Boyle’s long-awaited sequel to ‘Trainspotting,’ multiple sources report.

This would seem to be the final piece in the puzzle confirming that the follow-up to the 1996 cult classic will be Boyle’s next movie, reuniting the director with pretty much all the key players of the original film.

Original stars Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Johnny Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner are all confirmed to return, although Carlyle’s commitments to TV series ‘Once Upon a Time’ and Miler’s to ‘Elementary’ may be an issue in how soon cameras roll.

Screenwriter John Hodge, who adapted Irvine Welsh’s novel for the screen back in 1996, has also penned the sequel based on Welsh’s follow-up novel ‘Porno’ (which is not anticipated to be the film’s title).

Carlyle recently heaped praise on Hodge’s screenplay, calling it “one of the best scripts I’ve f***ing read.”

As noted by Deadline, Boyle has history with current Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman, formerly head of production at 20th Century Fox where he oversaw several of Boyle’s biggest hits including Oscar-winner ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

While no dates have been announced, reportedly the plan is for ‘Trainspotting 2′ to shoot in Spring 2016 ahead of a 2017 release.
