It looks as though ‘Starman’ will return… directed by Shawn Levy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a remake of the classic 1980’s sci-fi romance is in the works… and they’ve landed Shawn Levy to direct.

“Shawn Levy is shooting for the stars,” they revealed. “[He] has signed on to direct and produce Starman, Columbia Pictures’ remake of the 1980s sci-fi romance that starred Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen.”

Shawn Levy is perhaps best known for the ‘Night at the Museum’ movies, and also directed the Hugh Jackman action-adventure, ‘Real Steel’. He also directed the critically derided 2006 version of ‘The Pink Panther’… but maybe we can let that one slide.

The original ‘Starman’ told the story of an alien who crash lands on Earth, assuming the form of a woman’s dead husband in order to blend in. Forcing her to take him across the country to be picked up by his fellow beings, a romance soon blossoms… all while the government is hot on their tales.

Starring Jeff Bridges as the titular Starman and Karen Allen as Jenny, ‘Starman’ was directed by horror maestro, John Carpenter… and became quite the hit.

But can the remake do the same?

“The movie could prove to be a detour for Levy as well,” they explained. “Levy has done sci-fi before with the robot boxing movie Real Steel and dipped his toe in romantic comedy with Date Night, but this will be the filmmaker’s first dive into a character-based love story.”

Either way, it’s an interesting prospect. Let’s just hope it’s as good as the original.

“Arash Amel, best known for writing the Nicole Kidman drama Grace of Monaco, is writing the script for the project… Michael Douglas, who produced the original, will produce with Levy.”
