The Exorcist TV Series Planned

Last September, ‘The Exorcist’ rights holders Morgan Creek swore flatly, to both the general public and the original film’s director William Friedkin, that they would never, ever remake the 1973 horror classic.

Well, it would seem there was an ever-so-slight loophole in that promise.

According to Variety. Morgan Creek Productions are getting to work on an ‘Exorcist’ TV adaptation for 20th Century Fox Television.

At present, only a pilot episode is planned - but, as the term ‘pilot’ indicates, it is hoped a series will follow.

The one hour drama from screenwriter Jeremy Slater (’The Lazarus Effect,’ ‘Fantastic Four’) is pitched as a ‘modern reinvention’ of the story originally told in William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel.

We’re told the pilot, and subsequent series, will follow ”two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession.”

This seems a curious proclamation, given that Ellen Burstyn’s Chris McNeill - mother of the possessed child Regan (Linda Blair) - was arguably the lead in Friedkin’s film.

Slater will executive produce alongside Morgan Creek’s James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall.

‘The Exorcist’ remains the most acclaimed and commercially successful horror movie ever made: adjusted for inflation, it’s the 9th biggest box office hit of all time in the US. It was nominated for 10 Oscars, and won two.

It was also a hugely controversial film, and was banned from home entertainment in the UK until 1999.

Three sequels were made in the decades ahead, none of which were anywhere near as well received.
