The Secret Life Of Pets Passes $800 Million Mark At The Box Office

It’s no secret that animated movies tend to bring in big business at the box office nowadays, as Illumination and Universal’s ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ has proven.

Released in early July, ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ has now taken over $800 million worldwide, currently sitting on just shy of $805 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

And frankly it’s no surprise to see it do so well, with it being released during summer’s peak period when all the kids are off and, well, because you only need to look at the few dozen animated movies that’ve came beforehand from studios such as Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks to see there’s huge demand for adventures of the colourful, CGI kind.

While this year’s ‘Finding Dory’ and ‘Zootropolis’ have both amassed in excess of $900 million each, their budgets perhaps reflect that in so much as they cost around $150-200 to produce.

Looking at ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and its fairly modest budget (in comparison) of $75 million, it perhaps makes its feat a tad more impressive. More impressive due to the fact it’s not affiliated with Disney or Pixar, which, aside from last year’s disappointing return for ‘The Good Dinosaur’, pretty much sell themselves.

Yet this isn’t the first big animated hit Universal have had on their hands - they’re the film studio responsible for the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise and its ‘Minions’ spin-off which actually made almost $1.2 billion last year, costing just $74 million to make.

It seems that since the apparent resurgence of animation - arguably since ‘Frozen’ stormed into cinemas in 2013 to smash a number of box office records - and an unquenchable thirst for it, audiences simply can’t get enough. So as long as there’s the demand, we’ll keep seeing more, and rightly so - next up is Disney’s ‘Moana’ this Christmas.
