The top three most bankable British actors are all women

If you want a decent return on your investment, then the top three actors in the UK are currently women, according to new data.

And, coincidentally, they're all dames.

83-year-old Dame Julie Andrews is in first place, with the figures coming from details of movie budgets compared to box office earnings.

Dame Julie, star of movies like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, brings an ROI of 785 percent, equating to a return of £6.85 on every pound spent.

In second place is Dame Julie Walters, who returns 737 percent, so £6.36 on every pound, while in third is Dame Maggie Smith, who brings in a 712 percent return (£6.11 on every pound).

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is the first gentleman on the top 10 list, with an ROI of 664 percent, followed by Rowan Atkinson, thanks largely to the worldwide success of the Mr Bean movies, with a 628 percent ROI.

Making up the rest of the top 10 are Sam Worthington (622 percent), Tom Hiddleston (600 percent), Kate Winslet (583 percent), Tom Holland (578 percent) and Benedict Cumberbatch (558 percent).

The data has come from price comparison site Money Guru, which crunched the numbers of the 50 highest grossing films from 1993 to the present.

Sadly, there is a also a least bankable group, and they're nearly all men.

Comedian Steve Coogan heads this, with a return of 86 percent, bringing in just 13p on every pound spent on his services.

He's followed by Ewan McGregor (144 percent), Jude Law (149 percent), Idris Elba (199 percent), Sir Ben Kingsley (208 percent), Jason Statham (217 percent), Rafe Spall (222 percent), Helena Bonham Carter (225 percent), Russell Brand (226 percent) and Gary Oldman (235 percent).
