It had been known for a while that work was underway on a follow-up film, reuniting director Danny Boyle with the cast of the 1996 cult classic - but now Boyle has confirmed the as-yet untitled sequel has started filming.

Quoted via Facebook page Humans of Edinburgh, Boyle (an Oscar winner for 2009′s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’) casually let slip at a recent filmmaking workshop that photography had begun on the long-awaited follow-up:

“We’re up in Scotland filming Trainspotting 2 just now. I think what I love most about what I do is the variety, and being able to do something new every day. I get to meet such amazing people all the time.

“I think everyone’s fear is doing something a robot can do, and getting stuck doing something repetitive. I feel very fortunate and grateful to be able to make films, and to be able to always have a choice in what I do.

“Coming back to Edinburgh has actually been really fascinating, since filming the first Trainspotting Edinburgh has changed dramatically. You can see the gentrification massively in the city.“

It is believed that original stars Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner and Johnny Lee Miller have all returned to shoot the follow-up to the film that pretty much launched all their careers.

The film is based on author Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel ‘Porno’ (which is not expected to be the film’s title), which picks up with the surviving characters from ‘Trainspotting’ 20 years later.

‘Trainspotting’ screenwriter John Hodge has also penned the follow-up, which Robert Carlyle declared “one of the best scripts I’ve f***ing read.”

The ‘Trainspotting’ sequel is expected to be in cinemas sometime in 2017.
