Warcraft Smashes Chinese Box Office, Making $90m In Just Two Days

Concerns over the box office success of online game adaptation ‘Warcraft’ are beginning to fade, after it earned over $90 million (£62.4 million) after just two days in China.

It was thought that the Chinese market – where the game is huge – would give the movie a bump in revenue, but so far it’s exceeded all predictions.

Analysts predicted $120 million to $150 million (£103 million) to be made in its first five days, but now it looks as though those estimates are low.

To give some perspective, on its first day of release in the world’s second biggest movie market, it made a solid $20 million more than 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’, which previously held the first-day record with a haul of $28.3 million (£19.6 million).

In the US, where it’s due to open this weekend, the movie is not predicted to do nearly as well, with experts reckoning it will debut at around $25 million.

But thus far it’s already made $168.6 million (£116 million), recouping its production budget, meaning that despite concerns – it’s not fared too well with critics either – it could still perform as a blockbuster should.

The ambitious movie, which has been a decade in the making, has been robustly panned by critics, however, with a lowly 22% 'fresh’ rating on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Time magazine’s Stephanie Zacharek noted that is it 'almost worth watching, if you still find yourself at loose ends after you’ve given the dog a bath, organized 10 years’ worth of tax returns and completely moth-proofed your closet’.

Directed by 'Moon’ helmsman Duncan Jones, it stars Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Paula Patton, Robert Kazinsky and Travis Fimmel.
