William Shatner supports Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated 'Star Trek'

William Shatner has come out in support of Quentin Tarantino’s long touted R-rated Star Trek film.

Shatner, who was the first ever Captain Kirk, a role he debuted in back in 1966 and portrayed all the way through to 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, responded in kind on Twitter after he was asked, “Why does adding expletives become the reason for doing [Quentin Tarantino’s R-Rated Star Trek film]?!?”

But rather than being disgusted by the thought of Star Trek characters swearing, Shatner instead remarked, “Why are people plotzing about this? It’s my understanding that Star Trek Discovery has used expletives in some episodes. Why aren’t people melting down over that?”

That seemed to be enough to move on the discussion, as Trekkies started to point out that Discovery has indeed incorporated more controversial and explicit scenes into the usually family-friendly franchise.

Shatner’s support comes as Tarantino still tries to decided whether or not he will actually direct the Star Trek script that he has written. Earlier this summer, Tarantino confirmed to /Film that he had finished writing the film, before admitting “it’s a very big possibility” that he’ll direct a Star Trek film eventually.

“When I emerge my head like Punxsutawney Phil, post-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, [me and Paramount will] pick up talking about it again,” added Tarantino.

During a recent interview with Empire, Tarantino also confirmed that his vision for Star Trek is an -R-rated movie. “Oh yeah! It’s an R-rated movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated. There’s a script that exists for it now. I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.”

We’ll only find out more after Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is released on August 14.
