MTV to Host VMAs in Los Angeles on Emmy Weekend

MTV’s Video Music Awards ceremony was probably one of the main catalysts in NBC’s decision to move this year’s Primetime Emmy awards to a Monday, as the cabler had long staked claim to Aug. 24 as this year’s date for its annual event.

Perhaps as a way to guarantee that stars won’t have to choose between the two ceremonies (or, at least, not have to worry about red-eye flights), MTV announced today that this year’s VMAs will be returning to Southern California. The event, presented by Chase, will be broadcast live from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. — becoming the first award show to be held at the venue since it reopened in January after an extensive upgrade. This coup marks a win for L.A. in the long battle between major media cities New York and Los Angeles for award shows.

“With its incomparable legacy as a world-class music venue, the Forum is one of Southern California’s most iconic entertainment landmarks,” said Stephen Friedman, president of MTV. “The Forum has hosted some of the most legendary musical artists and performances ever seen and we can’t wait to add the 2014 Video Music Awards to this list and create the type of memorable moments that music fans will talk about for years to come.”

While the VMAs will not conflict with the Emmy Awards, it will interfere with related events — such as the Motion Picture Television Fund’s regular Evening Before affair.
