Mums Moved To Back Of Restaurant ‘So Men Could Read Newspapers In Peace’

A group of mums were left stunned when they were told to move to the back of a restaurant so that the men inside could read their newspapers in peace.

The women all regularly meet for lunch at Butterley Park Brewers Fayre restaurant in Ripley, Derbyshire, while on maternity leave with their children in tow.

However, they were asked by a member of staff to move to an area by the toilets after a few men complained about the noise from their children.

The furious mothers said they felt “humiliated” by the request and have written to Whitbread, the company who owns the restaurant, to demand an explanation.

Marie Barron, 35, from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, said: “We are not loud, hooligan types. We were not there to get drunk.

"We are working mothers, on maternity leave with seven month old babies.

"We were told that there are men who come in and read the paper and don’t want to be disturbed by women and babies and it was better if we were out of the way.”

Complaints: The women say they were told to move despite dining at the restaurant for weeks (SWNS)

However, the group think they were actually moved as some of them had been breastfeeding on the premises in previous weeks.

Marie added: “The treatment we received was unacceptable and left us feeling extremely embarrassed as well as discriminated against and ruined what is otherwise a perfectly lovely place to dine with friends and family.”

A spokesperson for Brewers Fayre said: “Brewers Fayre is a family restaurant that welcomes breastfeeding mothers, parents and carers with young children to enjoy all of our facilities, including the play areas.

"We would like to reassure guests that we regularly train our team members to ensure they put guest needs first and foremost.

"We are disappointed this claim has been made and are investigating as a priority.”

The company have since investigated what happened and say they are “confident they have learned from the experience”.

They have apologised to the women and offered them a £10 voucher for any Brewers Fayre restaurant.
