The Naked Gun reboot has landed its release date, with the comedy set to hit screens next year.

The original trilogy followed Leslie Nielsen in the iconic role of Frank Drebin, a bumbling police lieutenant who found himself encountering trouble and mishaps at any opportunity.

The reboot will reportedly see Liam Neeson play Drebin’s son, with the film currently set to be released on July 28, 2025 according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Details on the project have remained scarce ever since its official announcement, though we do know that Akiva Schaffer is set to direct whilst Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth MacFarlane will serve as a producer.

MacFarlane had offered an update on the film last month in an interview with The Wrap, saying: “It’s being worked on as we speak. Akiva Schaffer, who’s written the draft with his team, has done a hell of a job, and it is in development. So, it is still very much alive.”

Neeson has also spoken of the reboot, telling IndieWire that the upcoming film marks an important juncture in his varied career, saying: “I’m going to do it this year. It’ll either be the end of my so-called career or it’ll be another little avenue.”

“We’ll see. The script is being developed. It’s still very funny. There’s very funny stuff in it. They were all a series of gags,” he added, before referencing Nielsen’s role in the classic comedy Airplane!.

Nielsen first played Drebin on the small screen in the short-lived series Police Squad!, before the character found greater fame in The Naked Gun trilogy, which began in 1988 with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!.

This was followed by The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, which were released in 1991 and 1994 respectively; a fourth film had long been rumoured before Schaffer’s and MacFarlane’s project was greenlit.

The untitled Naked Gun reboot is scheduled to be released on July 28, 2025.
