Every year, luxury jewellery maison Chopard honours two rising stars from the film industry with the Trophée Chopard award, and 2023's recipients have just been announced: Naomi Ackie and Daryl McCormack.

The two will be presented with their accolades by Natalie Portman, who this year acts as the official 'godmother' – a leading star chosen to bestow the awards each year – in a glittering ceremony during the Cannes Film Festival. Chopard has been an official partner of the festival since 1998, annually celebrating an actress and an actor who are making a promising start to their career.

The talented Ackie and McCormack were selected by the Académie du Trophée Chopard, comprised of winners, godfathers and godmothers of previous years.

And they're in good company: for more than two decades, the Trophée Chopard laureates have gone on to become some of the industry's biggest and most celebrated names. Previous winners include Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Diane Kruger; Florence Pugh and Jessie Buckley were both nominated for Oscars a few months after being awarded the Trophée Chopard in 2019 and 2021 respectively.

After a global search, the BAFTA-nominated Naomi Ackie was picked to play the lead role in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the acclaimed film about the late singer’s life, which was released December 2022. She also has a leading role in Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut, Pussy Island, and recently completed filming for the next feature film from Parasite director Bong Joon Ho, Mickey 17. Her next role is in sci-fi thriller Morning, alongside Laura Dern and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Irish actor Daryl McCormack was widely praised for his lead role in the 2022 British comedy-drama Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, opposite Emma Thompson, for which he earned two BAFTA nominations. Last year he also featured in Sharon Horgan's popular dark comedy series, Bad Sisters, and had a recurring role in seasons five and six of Peaky Blinders. Next, he's starring in noir thriller, The Lesson, and has just finished wrapping a co-lead role in BBC series The Woman in the Wall, opposite Ruth Wilson.
