Naomi Watts Becomes Honorary President Of Tiny Welsh Football Club

Naomi Watts has agreed to become the honorary president of Glantraeth FC, a tiny Welsh football club based in Anglesey.

The Hollywood actress has said she is “very excited” to take on the role at the club based in the tiny village of Malltraeth - which has a population of 400 people.

Watts - best known for her roles in ‘King Kong’, 'The Ring’ and 'Mulholland Drive’ - does have ties to the area. As a child she spent time a nearby farm run by her grandparents.

Club secretary Stan Strickland suggested Watts for the role after former Glantraeth FC president Sir George Meyrick stood down in August 2015.

“She spent three years of her childhood here and attended school in Llangefni before becoming a major film star,” said Strickland (via BBC). “I just thought 'if you don’t ask, you don’t get’. She has now got her publicist involved, so we could end up in the New York Times.”

Glantraeth FC plays in the third tier Welsh Alliance football league division one. They draw crowds of up to 40 people. That’s not a typo - forty people.

Strickland has said he will be in further contact with Watts and her representatives in the coming days and says she will be provided with annual performance updates.

Hollywood has a weird history with English football. Sylvester Stallone is a big fan of Everton, which is likely why boxing drama ‘Creed’s climatic fight takes place at Goodison Park, then there’s Tom Hanks, who is a proud Aston Villa supporter and Kevin Costner, who supports Arsenal .
