Swan Song star Naomie Harris says she was taken by surprise by the new sci-fi film's writer-director Ben Cleary, when he sent her a 'dossier of information' about her character ahead of the shoot.

In the new film — which debuts in cinemas and on Apple TV+ on 17 December — the No Time To Die star plays Poppy, the pregnant wife of a dying man (Mahershala Ali) who clones himself.

She tells Yahoo that she didn’t have many conversations with Cleary before taking on the role, preferring to use the script as her guide.

“That’s my particular process”, she says, "I see the script as my bible, and I go through it with a fine tooth comb and find all the clues about who my character is, and then piece them together in my own way."

However, the filmmaker had more than just the script for her to work from, which is something Harris says he has in common with her Miami Vice director Michael Mann.

“Ben has been with this project for 10 years, and he knows it inside out and he has such a clear vision of who Poppy is”, says Harris.

“So he sent me something which is really unusual, which was a dossier of information about Poppy. What kind of music she likes, where she grew up, all of this information about her favourite books… it was super helpful.”

Swan Song will premiere in select UK cinemas nationwide and on Apple TV+ on 17 December, 2021.
