Neil Gaiman: Tom Hiddleston Should Play Morpheus In 'The Sandman'

‘The Sandman’ is still in the early stages of development, but the seminal comic book’s writer, Neil Gaiman, has revealed that he thinks Tom Hiddleston should play the lead character.

It had previously been assumed that Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is producing the film alongside David S Goyer as well as directing it, will star as Morpheus, but it now looks as though Gaiman wants the actor who portrayed the deliciously enigmatic ‘Thor’ villain to appear instead.

However Gaiman also admitted that he is likely to change his mind once again before anyone is actually cast in the role, because he has imagined quite a few actors in the part.

“It’s a funny thing with Morpheus,” Gaiman explained to the Radio Times. “Again, it’s that thing where you look around and think, ‘Yes, this person would be a fantastic person, and then time passes.’ There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine.

When he realised that Depp was too old for the part, Gaiman then quickly picked out another actor who he thought would be right.

“I think the first time I saw Benedict [Cumberbatch] was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus’.” However the fact that Cumberbatch is now tied up to play ‘Doctor Strange’ for Marvel means he isn’t likely to feature as the character now.

However Gaiman didn’t let this disappointment stop him in his tracks, and in fact he has now moved on to another English thespian in the shape of Tom Hiddleston.

“Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”

Sounds simple enough. Surely Hugh Grant should now be on the phone to his agent pleading to get him an audition. It’s refreshing to hear Gaiman being so candid about potential candidates for the film, especially since he is involved creatively.

And while it is a tad shocking to hear that Joseph Gordon-Levitt won’t automatically be playing the role, this might be the right choice.

It’s often disregarded how much of an undertaking it is to both direct and star in a film. Gordon-Levitt could also see this as the perfect opportunity to enhance his reputation since his work on ‘Don Jon’ and truly showcase his talents as a filmmaker.

And if Tom Hiddleston was cast then he’d have the perfect actor at his disposal to compliment his ability.
