Netflix has a “moral responsibility” to air a disclaimer informing viewers that The Crown is a fictional drama, Helena Bonham Carter has said.

The actress, who took over the role of Princess Margaret in season three of the show said it was important that producers draw a distinction between “our version” and “the real version”.

She made the remarks on an episode of the show’s official podcast which was recorded after filming and released on Monday.

It comes after Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary said the show should carry an alert informing viewers that it is a work of fiction.

He told the Mail on Sunday: "It's a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that.

"Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.

Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer has also called for the show to include a disclaimer.

The show’s creator, Peter Morgan last week waded into the debate saying: “When you’re really only focused on research, the drama suffers.”
