New 'Blade Runner' project a sequel

Original writer on board for sci-fi follow-up, will possibly have female lead

The new ‘Blade Runner’ movie we first heard about back in August will be a sequel, according to studio Alcon Entertainment.

A statement said Ridley Scott will be re-teaming with Hampton Fancher, who penned the original 'Blade Runner' script with David Peoples back in 1982 but failed to make much of a mark of the film world thereafter. He did write crime caper ‘The Mighty Quinn’.

Alcon Entertainment said the sequel will take place "some years after the first film concluded”, adding: "It is a perfect opportunity to reunite Ridley with Hampton on this new project, one in fact inspired by their own personal collaboration, a classic of cinema if there ever was one."

While on promotional duties for ‘Prometheus’, Scott also let slip that the film will be more female-focused next time around. He told The Daily Beast: "We have a very good take on it. And we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

We assume Harrison Ford won’t be involved after he fell out with Ridley Scott during the filming of the original, though the pair have apparently made up0 in recent times.

'Blade Runner' was based on Phillip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' and starred Ford as replicant hunter Deckard who must track down and kill four dangerous cyborg escapees.
