New Team Members Rumoured For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ writer-director James Gunn declared late last year that he would pass no further comment on any rumours surrounding the upcoming sequel to Marvel’s 2014 hit.

Naturally this hasn’t stopped rumours from emerging in abundance - and now a report claims knowledge of how the Guardians team line-up will change in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.’

Not unlike the Avengers, the Guardians have had a fluid line-up in the comics, with many different characters coming and going over the years since Marvel first introduced the title back in 1969.

The movie line-up of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot was only settled on in the comics in 2008, and none of these characters were part of the original team.

As such, it makes sense for the Guardians to reorganise their ranks on the big screen as well - and Geek.com claim this is just what will happen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.’ And they also claim to know of three new team members.

Are these claims pure hearsay, or do Geek.com really have the insider knowledge which they claim is at their disposal? We don’t know, so take the following with a big pinch of salt.

Even so - beware of potential spoilers ahead.

The first, surely least unexpected new Guardian named is Yondu, as played by Michael Rooker in the first film. This character actually was part of the original Guardians line-up, and James Gunn has long hinted at having big plans for the character, so this would make perfect sense.

Rather less expected is the claim that Nebula - adoptive daughter of Thanos/sister of Gamora, played by Karen Gillan - will also become a Guardian this time around.

Whilst all the Guardians come from the wrong side of the law, Nebula pretty much went outright evil as an ally of Ronan the Accuser, so this could be a very interesting change for the character.

The one all-new character who Geek.com tell us will be introduced to the ranks of the Guardians in ‘Vol 2′ is Mantis, a role for which they say actress Pom Klementieff is ‘heavily rumoured.’ (It was announced in October 2015 that Klementieff had joined the cast, and subsequent reports have claimed she would play Mantis, but there has been no confirmation.)

Earth-born (or should we say ‘Terran’?) in the comics, Mantis is a martial arts expert with the ability to telepathically communicate with plant life. She’s also, in some comics incarnations, another green-skinned woman, which we can’t help thinking might be a bit awkward with Gamora already filling that niche…

These claims come on top of reports earlier this week that the main villain of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2′ will be Ego, the Living Planet.

We’ll be able to find out for ourselves how much truth there is to these reports when ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2′ opens in UK cinemas on 28 April 2017.
