Called 'Toy Story of Terror', it will be a 30-minute special that will premiere on the ABC channel in the US.

The first ever Pixar TV special will be directed by Angus MacLane, who helmed the five-minute short 'Toy Story Toons' instalment 'Small Fry'.

Pixar released a still from the special on its Twitter feed, along with some information about the plot. The synopsis is as follows:

“Bonnie is on a road trip to go see grandma with her mum and the toys are in the trunk. Mum gets a flat tyre and they have to spend the night at a motel and all kinds of chaos ensues.”

All the usual crew will be back voicing their characters, including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz, alongside Joan Cusack as Jessie, Timothy Dalton as Mr Pricklepants and Kristen Schaal as Trixie.

They'll also be joined by 'Rocky' and 'Arrested Development' star Carl Weathers as Combat Carl, featured in the very first 'Toy Story' film.

It follows speculation that a fourth film in the series could be in the pipeline.

Disney CEO Bob Iger referred to 'another' sequel being in the works at the animation studio - other than the forthcoming 'Finding Dory', the follow-up to 'Finding Nemo' - during a recent address to shareholders.

Tom Hanks has also previously said that he believed a new film was likely to happen.

This new short is not likely to quell such speculation over the future of the franchise. Let's hope someone snaps it up to show on TV here...
