Nicola Sturgeon criticised for 'graceless' wild celebration after SNP unseat Jo Swinson

Nicola Sturgeon was accused of a “nasty” election celebration last night when cameras spotted her enthusiastically punching the air after the SNP unseated Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson.

The SNP leader was filmed ‘gracelessly’ celebrating after her candidate claimed a big scalp in East Dunbartonshire.

Ms Sturgeon shook her arms as she saw Amy Callaghan had unseated Ms Swinson.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage described her reaction as “graceless and nasty” while Lib Dem politician Layla Moran said it was “unacceptably ungracious”.

Ms Sturgeon said that on a personal level, she “feels for” Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson.

The Liberal Democrat leader congratulated Ms Callaghan, who won the East Dunbartonshire seat by fewer than 150 votes.

She said: “It is an amazing job, I’m sure you will love doing it and I wish you well and what you said about young women and smashing boundaries I wholeheartedly agree.”

The Lib Dem leader thanked her family and party for their support.

She said: “I would also like to thank my agent, Liberal Democrat campaigners and activists who have made this campaign special.”

She added: “I particularly would like to thank my mum, my sister Nicola, my husband Duncan and our two darling boys Andrew and Gabriel.”

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Sturgeon said: “I’m bitterly disappointed at the result UK wide, I think Tory governments are bad for the UK, more than they’re bad for Scotland, and I really don’t want the UK to leave the European Union.”

She said Boris Johnson may have a mandate “to take England out” of the EU but not Scotland.
