Nike unveils a new look for the World Cup champion USWNT (and the men, too)

The United States men’s and women’s national soccer teams are boasting a new look after sportswear giant Nike unveiled the 2020 uniforms for both squads on Wednesday.

The kits, which will also be worn by youth national teams, are identical for both genders, with one key difference: The jersey for the 2019 Women’s World Cup champion USWNT is adorned with four stars placed horizontally above the crest, signifying the program’s four world titles.

The women’s previous white primary shirt, which was worn exclusively by the USWNT, had three stars; a fourth was added last July when the U.S. defeated the Netherlands in the World Cup final in France. The women and men wore the same red secondary uniforms in 2019.

The women’s team will be the first to don the new duds, which U.S. Soccer claims are “designed to provide an undeniably American look.” The USWNT will debut the (mostly) navy secondary version March 5 against England in the opening match of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. They’ll wear the whites on March 9 in their second game, versus Spain. The men will have to wait until March 26, when they take on the Dutch in a friendly in Amsterdam.

Nike claims that its new kits wick moisture away from the body 55 percent faster than the previous version. They also say that they are 13 percent more breathable and stretch 10 percent more. And in another change, this year’s editions features the company’s old-school “Futura” logo for the first time; only the standard swoosh had adorned U.S. Soccer gear over the last quarter century. Oregon-based Nike has been the federation’s exclusive uniform supplier since 1995.
