Yahoo Movies ‘Not at all’ – Prem star unbothered by failed Man Utd move, but hints at desire for bigger things
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has detailed his belief that his failure to move to Manchester United this summer is “not at all a missed opportunity” but hinted he is being “patient” over a bigger move.
United tracked a number of potential midfield options this summer. They signed Mason Mount early on, but remained on the hunt for a more defensive-minded option throughout the transfer window.
They, along with most big clubs in England, were keen on Romeo Lavia, as well as Ryan Gravenberch, Sofyan Amrabat and Onana. While they eventually landed on taking Amrabat in on loan, they did reportedly approach Everton for Onana.
Indeed, it was suggested the Toffees told them it would take a bid of £50million or more to prise the midfielder away. Clearly United didn’t fancy paying that, and didn’t actually end up paying a fee at all, though they could choose to buy Amrabat at the end of his loan.
Onana has since detailed how he doesn’t feel he’s missed out on a move to Old Trafford, but he did hint at the fact he’s waiting for a big move at some point in the future.
“It’s not at all a missed opportunity,” he told Le Soir.
“In football, it’s all about timing. You have to be patient.”
While he continued by being complimentary about current club Everton, he seemed to suggest they are just a stepping stone for him.
“And, in the meantime, I will continue to play football at Everton. A mythical club. I am very satisfied,” Onana added.
It’s fair for the midfielder to want to move onto bigger things at some point in the future. It would be strange if a professional sportsperson didn’t harbour ambitions to play at the highest level possible.
He’s performed well at Everton so far, so much so that United were keen on him, and given he’s only 22, he’ll surely attract a lot more attention as he progresses even further.
He is clearly ready to be patient and let a big move come when it does, though Everton will hope that’s not in the immediate future, as they’re already struggling with him, so without, they’d be in even more danger.
