Who doesn’t like listening to music? Music is a universal language that transcends culture, religion and all social aspects. Every element in the universe originates from a sound vibration; hence it is no wonder that music can be harnessed from nature – the rustle of trees, crunching of grass and even bees buzzing around, all have a calm effect on the brain, inducing a sense of happiness and joy.  

A great example of music having the power to induce a remedial melody for a stress filled mind is the ever green lullabies which were sung by our mothers at a very young age. It is identified that singing lullabies to children calms them, putting them to a peaceful sleep. Similarly, having music as a companion at your workplace can not only increase ones productivity but also acts as a breather amidst of a stressful environment. All these examples demonstrate the effect of music on ones mental health by stimulating a calming sensation.

Numerous ways in which music can help improve mental health

Learning music at an early age helps in cognitive development of a child and build a well developed personality. Music can be approached for a therapeutic cure in multiple ways:-

  1. Lyrical writing has proven itself through many successful artists of both, Hollywood and Bollywood. It has been a helped medium for many artists to portray topics which are difficult to discuss or are rarely spoken of. It helps in tackling mental health issues by providing people an alternative form of communicating and expressing themselves.

  2. Improvising music playing skills has been the path way to some great music. Expressive music activities enhance the positive self-image and improve coping skills. Playing various instruments encourages emotional expression, building confidence and talent. Alongside this as artist, improvising on music skills to fit the crowd’s interest is important. This concern can be rectified by innovation. Innovation into music created a path way top some great music genres for the century. It is known to produce happy hormones in the brain which helps in bettering the overall mental state.

  3. Actively making music a part of your day can help regulates ones mood. Music has the power to unlock chemicals such a as dopamine (happy chemicals) engaging the neocortex  of our brains to reduce the impulsive and reckless activity of our mind.

Music as a remedy has been continuously explored and actively considered by multiple medical professionals as well. Music is the available medium that one must optimize through playing instruments, guided imagery, humming noises or even writing songs to solve conflicts. Music helps in creating a positive impact for all age groups and also on people suffering with stress, anxiety and other mental health problems.
