The Nutty Professor looks to be getting the reboot treatment. Again.
Deadline reports that Project X Entertainment — the team behind the forthcoming Scream 5 – has landed the rights to the comedy caper, which follows a nerdy professor who drinks a potion which transforms him into a more handsome but ignorant alter ego, Buddy Love.
Originally made famous by comedian Jerry Lewis in 1963, Eddie Murphy memorably rebooted the role in 1996.
He played the professor, Buddy and also five members of the Klump family.
Following the film's success, he also starred in the sequel The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps in 2000.
Project X Entertainment producers James Vanderbilt, William Sherak and Paul Neinstein will take on the movie. No studio is yet attached to the project.
The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps took a box office total of $166 million worldwide despite a small budget. With the film industry still feeling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, this could be a smart move.
The acquisition follows Project X Entertainment moving ahead with its Scream 5 reboot with Paramount.
It will be directed by Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who collaborated on surprise horror hit Ready Or Not last year.
