The OA fans are battling to save the show with an online petition, after Netflix controversially axed it.

On Monday (August 5), The OA creator and star Brit Marling announced that the series had not been renewed for a third season, leaving fans adrift following that groundbreaking season 2 finale cliffhanger.

In response, a fan petition titled 'Save The OA, Renew The OA for season 3' has been started on change.org and has already reached over 11,000 signatures at time of writing.

"The OA has just been cancelled by Netflix on August 5th: the exact date for which its online fanbase had planned an online #RenewTheOA campaign, requesting for Netflix to renew it for at least a third season," the petition description reads.

"The series was initially planned for a five-season run with Netflix and for the reasons stated above we feel it needs to be given justice in the form of a renewal or a final conclusion."

Speaking about The OA's cancellation on Instagram, Brit Marling wrote: "We feel profound gratitude to Netflix and the people we have worked with there for making it possible to make Part I and Part II.

"We feel proud of those 16 un-compromised hours."

Other cast members including Brandon Perea (Alfonso 'French' Sosa) and Ian Alexander (Buck Vu) have also voiced their dismay that the show is coming to an end.

"Finding a new dimension," Ian commented, while Brandon voiced hoped that cast-members and fans of the show "can get it back by spreading the word".

Patrick Gibson, Phyllis Smith and Jason Isaacs have yet to comment.

Of course, The OA is far from the only Netflix show to be pulled this year.

The sci-fi series joins the likes of Tuca & Bertie, Santa Clarita Diet, The Rain and Dark which have been canned by the streaming service despite their respective strong fanbases.

However, there was a happy ending for One Day At A Time, which was saved by Pop TV after Netflix dumped it, so perhaps there is still hope for The OA.

If not, it's time to start practising those movements...

The first two seasons of The OA are available to stream on Netflix worldwide.
