Barack Obama praised the US movie business on a visit to the DreamWorks animation studio, and joked that his ears had helped inspire 'Shrek'.

The US president pitched up at the lot, in Glendale, Los Angeles, and took a tour of the facility.

Speaking to reporters, he said: “I've come here today, because this is one of America's economic engines, not just DreamWorks, but this whole cluster of companies that generations have grown up knowing, Disney and Warner and Universal and others.”

He added that the studio, along with the US movie business at large, is among the things that help make the country what it is.

“It's part of what makes us exceptional, part of what makes us such a world power,” he went on.

“You can go anywhere on the planet and you'll see a kid wearing a Madagascar T-shirt. You can say, ''May the Force be with you,'' they know what you're talking about.

“Hundreds of millions of people may never set foot in the United States, but thanks to you, they've experienced a small part of what makes our country special.”

“There’s a natural connection between me and DreamWorks. I don’t know if you know this — but my ears were one of the inspirations for Shrek. That’s true, true story.”

As well as employees of the studio, he met with boss Jeffrey Katzenberg and chairman Mellody Hobson, then watched as Steve Martin – who greeted him with an 'elbow bump' because he was suffering with a cold - and 'Big Bang Theory' star Jim Parsons recorded voice parts for new film 'Home'.

He also watched motion-capture scenes being filmed for 'How To Train Your Dragon 2' and was highly amused by having his own voice used by a specially-created, animated purple alien character.

Katzenberg has long been a supporter of Obama, and is key among his entertainment industry backers.
