Oculus Director To Helm Ouija 2

Looks like horror hitmakers Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes have another franchise on their hands.

The Hollywood Reporter have announced that Mike Flanagan, director and co-writer of 2014 horror ‘Oculus,’ has signed on for ‘Ouija 2,’ which he will direct and co-write with his frequent collaborator Jeff Howard.

While ‘Ouija’ didn’t necessarily set the world on fire when it cinemas last Halloween, it grossed over $102 million worldwide off the back of a $5 million budget - a significant enough profit margin to warrant a sequel.

In any case, it seems likely that the only thing ‘Ouija 2′ will share with its predecessor is the board of the title. No actors from ‘Ouija’ are reported to be coming back.

Instead, Flangan will reunite with ‘Oculus’ actress Annalise Basso, who played the younger version of Karen Gillan’s character in the film’s many flashback sequences.

All that is known plot-wise is that Basso will portray “a young girl grieving the death of her father.” Call us crazy, but something tells us she’ll try to reach him with a ouija board, and live to regret doing so…

Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes spearheaded the horror remake wave in the early 2000s with their ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ remake, whilst Jason Blum’s Blumhouse dominated the genre in more recent years with the ‘Paranormal Activity’ series. The two production houses previously collaborated on ‘The Purge’ and its sequel.

Universal have ‘Ouija 2′ lined up for a 21 October 2016 cinema release. In the meantime, we wait to learn the fate of Mike Flanagan’s latest movie ‘Before I Wake,’ whose release is in doubt at present due to the financial troubles of distributor Relativity Media.
