Oculus: See Karen Gillan get spooked in new UK trailer

You’ll never look at a lightbulb in the same way again.

Before we see former ‘Doctor Who’ star Karen Gillan in Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ this summer, the flame-haired actress is making her horror debut in ‘Oculus’.

The UK trailer for the supernatural chiller has just landed, watch it above. But, be warned, it’s not for the squeamish.

Filmed before the Scottish actress shaved her head to play the villainous Nebula in Marvel’s forthcoming sci-fi spectacular, Gillan plays Kaylie, a young woman convinced a mirror is to blame for her parent’s premature deaths.

Her brother Tim was convicted of their murder, and Kaylie is determined to prove her sibling's innocence upon his release from protective custody - 10 years after their mysterious deaths.

She blames the malevolent supernatural forces that haunt an antique mirror in their childhood home, and sets out to investigate, but as is the case with horror films, things start to go horribly wrong.

One scene in the trailer that involves an apple and a lightbulb will have you triple-checking your lunch box before you tuck in to your five-a-day.

The trailer also demonstrates the star’s versatility as Gillan’s Scottish brogue is well-hidden by a convincing American accent.

Gillan made her name as Amy Pond in ‘Doctor Who’, playing the Time Lord’s companion from 2010-2012 opposite Matt Smith, the eleventh Doctor.

She’s since appeared as Jean Shrimpton in the TV movie ‘We’ll Take Manhattan’, and in little-seen rom-com ‘Not Another Happy Ending’.

The double release of ‘Oculus’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will likely make her the biggest break-out star of ‘Doctor Who’ since the series began in 1963.

‘Oculus’ is in UK cinemas 13 June, 2014.
