Gerard Butler's new action movie Greenland has been given its first official trailer, and it looks like a cross between Olympus Has Fallen and Armageddon.

Greenland, which is currently set for release on August 21, follows a man (Butler, obviously) who fights to get his estranged wife and son to safety after a comet breaks up and begins to collide with Earth, causing near-apocalyptic levels of destruction.

If you're thinking this all sounds rather familiar, you're right. Butler previously starred in Geostorm, which also race against time to save the Earth. But this one doesn't look deliberately terrible.

The movie is directed by Angel Has Fallen's Ric Roman Waugh, while the script is written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune.

Alongside Butler, the cast also includes Deadpool's Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, Hope Davis, Andrew Bachelor, and Joshua Mikel.

The official synopsis for Greenland reads: "A family fights for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary.

"Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being leveled by the comet’s fragments, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity.

"As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

Greenland is currently expected to arrive in cinemas on August 21.
