Oppenheimer has not long exploded into cinemas globally, but the blockbuster has come under some heat from viewers.

Cillian Murphy plays the titular J Robert Oppenheimer and is joined by an all-star cast of Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves and Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss.

An issue that has started to circulate online involves flags being waved in a scene by crowd members. The film is set in the 1940s, and the flag used in the scene depicts the current US design with 50 stars. At the time, Hawaii and Alaska were yet to be declared states, meaning a 48-starred flag would have been correct.

Some sharp-eyed cinemagoers flagged the issue online with one tweeting: "It was good and all, but I'll be that guy and complain they used 50-star flags in a scene set in 1945."

It is noticeable on some flags that show the current staggered pattern of stars, compared to the grid pattern of the old flag. It is worth noting that this only occurs in some scenes, whilst others do have historically-accurate flags.

It didn't ruin it for all spectators, however. One impressed viewer tweeted: "Yea so Oppenheimer is unarguably one of the best films I've ever seen. The only flaw is that they showed American flags with 50 stars on it when the US only had 48 states in 1945. That's it. The rest of it is perfect."

Another added: "People are getting too hung up over the inaccuracies of the American flag in this particular scene of Oppenheimer. Don't let it distract you from the fact that Cillian Murphy ABSOLUTELY earned his Oscar nomination at this moment."

The film has performed well at the box office, with its takings still increasing despite the flag issue, currently standing at an impressive $229.9 million globally.

Oppenheimer is out now in cinemas.
