It looks as though the original 'Star Wars' trilogy is headed to 4K ultra-high definition… but does this mean we'll see a theatrical re-release?
It's something that most 'Star Wars' fans would love to see - a theatrical re-release of the original trilogy episodes. But will this happen anytime soon? It looks as though Disney may be planning to release the original films in 4K ultra-high definition. But will the movies head back to the cinema?
Thanks to Making Star Wars, the ambitious 4K conversion project was brought to our attention. Headed up by the folks at Reliance Mediaworks, it looks as though the original trilogy episodes will be getting the ultra-high definition treatment.
"The company responsible for the conversion has content on their site stating the Star Wars Trilogy has been converted to 4k 16 bit resolution."
Note: After personally reaching out to Reliance Mediaworks, they've since removed the 'Star Wars' project listing from their website.
But what does this mean for the original trilogy episodes? Will we see a 4K theatrical re-release anytime soon?
I can't help thinking that Disney would be keen to capitalise on their 'Star Wars' investment. And while 'Episode VII' ushers in the next generation of the 'Star Wars' saga, perhaps it's a good time to revisit those classics.
Of course, there's also another possibility - a further 3D conversion.
We've already seen 'The Phantom Menace' re-released in 3D. And after a special showing of 'Attack of the Clones' at Celebration Europe, perhaps there's demand for a 3D version of the original trilogy.
There's already been some speculation that we'll be seeing 3D Blu-rays of the earlier 'Star Wars' episodes… but could the entire saga be getting the 3D treatment? And will they appear back in cinemas in glorious ultra-high def?
For now, we'll just have to wait and see. But either way, it looks as though Disney has plans for the galaxy far, far away.
Do you think the original trilogy will get a 4K theatrical re-release? Will they be converted into 3D? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
