Oscars bosses are once again facing criticism for a notable omission in the Memorial Montage.

Viewers watching Sunday's ceremony from Hollywood saw a powerful presentation from Angela Bassett honouring those lost to COVID-19, racial violence as well as those in the entertainment industry.

While the Academy paid fitting tribute to Black Panther star and 2021 Oscar nominee Chadwick Boseman, Sean Connery and Batman Forever director Joel Schumacher, some viewers were upset that Glee star Naya Rivera was missing from the montage.

Rivera tragically died last July in a tragic drowning accident on Lake Piru in Santa Clarita. The Academy may not have included Rivera in its montage because she was primarily known for her TV work, but the actress did appear in Glee: The 3D Concert Movie and the indie horror hit At the Devil's Door.

One viewer took exception to her absence, complaining: "Once again, no love for Naya Rivera. #Oscars."

Another felt the omission was particularly glaring: "bruh they didn’t even show naya Rivera??? #oscars."

The Oscars' British counterpart at the BAFTA Film Awards faced a similar backlash when organisers left Dame Diana Rigg out of its memorial because they felt she was more associated with TV.

"With limited time available for obituaries within the broadcast, it isn't possible to honour all those who have sadly passed away," a spokesperson for the BAFTA Film Awards said.

The Oscars have been criticised many times for memorial snubs over the years — with Luke Perry, Austin Powers' Verne Troyer, Batman '66 star Adam West and Alexis Arquette among those to being excluded in recent years.

The 93rd Academy Awards were held on Sunday, April 25 from Union Station in Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Complex in Hollywood.
