The Overnight Hair-Care Essentials Beauty Pros Swear By

Welcome to Sleep Week! We're dedicating five days of content to one of our absolute favorite activities, and the products that make catching zzz's that much more enjoyable. Get ready to sleep tight.

So you've decided that this is the year of finally sorting out a proper regimen to achieve the healthy hair of your dreams. Even better, why not try and do so while you dream? Pros agree that an effective nighttime routine is a top priority when it comes to long-term hair health.

"Having a solid hair routine while sleeping is important because the hair is in a vulnerable state during this time," says New York City-based hairstylist Valerie Vanessa, whose clients include Demi Lovato and Nicky Hilton. "Proper care and protection can help minimize damage, breakage and frizz, leading to healthier and more manageable hair over time."

But not everyone should rely on the same overnight hair-care routine: Hair texture matters. According to Vanessa, "coily and curly hair often benefit from extra moisture and protection, while straight hair may need products that add volume and minimize oiliness."

On a similar note, determining your hair goal — be it to hydrate, repair, volumize or style — also informs which products and techniques to use, Vanessa explains. Investing in products like moisturizing leave-in conditioners, hydrating hair masks and volumizing serums can make all the difference.

Whether you're in need of a nighttime hair-care re-vamp or simply on the hunt for new products to add to your already-established routine, Fashionista curated a comprehensive breakdown of the top expert-approved overnight hair-care essentials ahead.

Best Overnight Hair Masks

Imagine overnight face masks, but for your hair: These intensive treatments singlehandedly address a slew of hair-care needs while sleeping, from repair (for damaged, chemically treated hair) to hydration (for dry, dull strands). As most hair masks tend to be heavier, creamy formulations, these overnight treatments work best for thicker hair types and curly and coily textures.

When it comes to application, it's best to slather the mask from roots to ends. Vanessa also recommends adding the additional step of covering your strands with a shower cap or silk scarf "to prevent the mask from transferring to your pillow."

Best Overnight Leave-In Conditioners

No matter your hair type or texture, leave-in conditioners can go a long way toward boosting the overall health and strength of strands. Best used after the hair is cleansed (and before styling), the moisture-locking product can help to combat breakage, reduce frizz and detangle.

Los Angeles-based hairstylist Justine Marjan, whose celebrity clients include Khloe Kardashian, Ashley Graham and Olivia Culpo, swears by Function of Beauty's Pro Bond Repair Custom Leave-In Treatment to promote hair health while also creating a heatless hairstyle overnight. (She suggests misting it on, and then weaving hair into a loose braid while you sleep.) The treatment also provides "heat protection, damage repair and frizz-controlling benefits," she notes.

Best Sleep Bonnets for Healthy Hair

Sleep bonnets are true hair-care multitaskers: Beyond reducing frizz and friction, they can also help to maintain hairstyles, protect strands from moisture loss and minimize breakage, according to Vanessa. (And as we already mentioned, they're key when using many of the other products listed here overnight, since they prevent serums, masks and treatments from transferring to your pillow and skin.)

Though hair bonnets are most commonly used among those with curly and coily hair, all hair textures can benefit from incorporating the accessory into their nightly routine. Look for one made from smooth, natural fibers (like silk) for maximum impact.

Best Overnight Hair Oils and Serums

Hair oils offer a host of impressive benefits: They can impart shine, lock in hydration, smooth flyaways and soothe the cuticle.

For finer hair types, it's best to use oil sparingly, concentrating it on the ends of damp hair, in avoidance of oil buildup on the scalp. Conversely, thicker hair types can use hair oils on dry strands, more frequently and closer to the scalp.

Scalp-specific serums can also work wonders, especially when dealing with dryness, itchiness and dandruff. Los-Angeles based celebrity hairstylist Sienree Du— who counts Niall Horan and Bella Poarch as clients — recommends Ouai's Scalp Serum, which she says helps hydrate and balance the scalp while also minimizing shedding and thinning.

Best Sleep Hair Accessories

When it comes to overnight hair accessories, it's all about looking for options that reduce friction and avoid uncomfortable hair tugging.

Du is a big fan of silk pillowcases: "Silk absorbs less moisture, which means all the oils and treatments you use to maintain your hair stays on your strands rather than soak into your pillowcase; it causes less friction so that means less breakage and frizz on your hair," she says.

Other must-have overnight accessories include silk scrunchies and heatless curlers, which keep things gentle, even if you tend to be a restless, toss-and-turn sleeper.
